Plant-Based Beverage Production Requirements and Product Variants.

Oat and Grain Beverages

Whole-grain processing and bought-base blending have different preparation, solids, enzymatic / separation and waste boundaries. Establish the actual ingredient source and qualified recipe route before tank selection.

Soy, Nut and Other Bases

Protein, fat, particles, allergen transitions and heat stability vary. Define representative formulas and full-process trials with ingredient and equipment specialists.

Plant-Protein RTD Blends

Purchased isolate / base blending may involve wetting, hydration, air and emulsion management. Distinguish these drinks from solid plant-protein foods and use the protein-RTD guide for high-protein product questions.

Connect the Production Process

Identify every required preparation and specialist process step before comparing equipment prices.

  1. Define supplied ingredientRaw grain / bean, extract or powder.
  2. Map specialist dutiesPreparation, separation and treatment.
  3. Check waste and utilitiesComplete site and service envelope.
  4. Compare owner alternativesSame product and acceptance basis.
Resolve before procurementA blend tank amount cannot be used as a whole-ingredient plant capital estimate.

Survey the existing ingredient, mixing, thermal, package and cleaning envelope against the proposed formulas.

  1. Assess the gapDuty, materials and OEM support.
  2. Run representative trialsHydration through final package.
  3. Define correctionsEquipment, controls and utilities.
  4. Verify releaseQualified product / site ownership.
Resolve before procurementA line that handles dairy by volume is not automatically suitable for every plant recipe.

Map product identity, allergen transitions, soils, qualified circuits and downstream readiness.

  1. Group compatible productsIngredients and acceptance basis.
  2. Map cleaning scopeInstalled and manual-clean tasks.
  3. Coordinate recipe statesIdentity and approved versions.
  4. Measure first good outputRelease and realized useful time.
Resolve before procurementKeep actual baseline ingredient recovery separate from extra volume already valued in contribution.

Plant-Based Beverage Equipment Selection: Resolve the Operating Duty First.

Define the ingredient processing boundary and verify the finished product through the actual thermal / package route. The procurement decision should identify specialist packages and acceptance before comparing apparently similar tank volumes. In a conversion project, include controls, cleaning, utilities and the cost of trials alongside the new process component.

Engineering the Whole Line

Start with the business outcome

A plant-based beverage project starts with the material boundary: whole raw ingredient processing, purchased base or protein / fat blending can require very different equipment. DPS can discuss scoped batching, tanks, utilities, controls, cleaning and installation integration around qualified specialist packages. The ROI case must be supported by accepted product and the actual ingredient / process / package trials.

Confirm the exact plant-based beverage product, preservation route and project suitability with DPS before assigning a delivery scope. Confirm whole-grain / bean extraction, enzymatic steps, separation, homogenization, heat treatment, aseptic filling, formulation and product claims with qualified specialists. This is a product-specific scope-assessment guide; no universally compatible dairy conversion or DPS ownership of specialist plant-base technology is implied.

Commissioning Tests and Performance Acceptance.

Define the Ingredient Route

Separate whole-grain or raw-base processing from purchased-base blending, including preparation, separation and waste responsibilities.

Trial the Formula Through Packaging

Evaluate hydration, protein and fat behavior, particles and treatment compatibility with ingredient and processing specialists.

Verify Base and Allergen Transitions

Check ingredient identity, installed cleaning circuits, qualified product changes and accepted packaged output across the agreed recipe envelope.

Plan Your Project

Review the scope, cost assumptions and operating case for your project. The examples and calculators below support early planning and are not DPS quotations.

Compare Operating Corrections, Retrofit and Replacement.

Start with retained equipment duty, product trials and full-process acceptance. Measure hydration, release, cleaning and package losses across the proposed formulas.

Investment boundaryCapacity and procurement savings in the example are conditional on successful qualification; they are not a promise that any dairy line can be converted.

Choose whole-ingredient or bought-base scope, representative formulas, specialist packages, product / package route, utilities, staffing and demand.

Investment boundaryInclude all ingredient processing, waste, site work, launch trials, fixed operating costs and working capital; avoid quoting only the blending section.

Plant-Based Beverage Equipment Price vs Full Installed Project Cost.

Compare proposals with the same product duty, supplier boundaries and acceptance basis. The amount below is a transparent planning example, not a market price range, supplier estimate or DPS quotation.

Separate one-time startup / shutdown cost$60,000
Incremental working capital$45,000
Total initial cash$967,500

The defined scope assumes applicable freight, procurement charges and taxes are included in the owner’s estimate. Add missing civil, land / shell, OEM, environmental, validation and permitting costs explicitly. Site and field conditions, duty, production access and quoted supplier scope determine actual price. Financing is excluded.

Worked Operating Case

Hypothetical owner-budget case: 250 days × 0.6 useful recovered hour/day × 1,400 good kg/h × 55% realization gives 115,500 incremental sold kg/year after the 150,000 kg demand ceiling. Net price $3.7/kg less incremental variable cost $2.3/kg gives $1.4/kg contribution. The baseline inputs assume $24,000 energy, $18,000 water / chemistry and $9,000 maintenance reductions per year. Avoided payroll is 0 hours × $40 × 0% cash realization. Verified baseline purchase reduction contributes $9,000; its basis is unchanged accepted baseline output. Deduct $28,000 added annual fixed cost. Result: $193,700 steady net benefit; initial cash $967,500 includes the separate site, contingency, startup and working-capital inputs. These are original illustrative assumptions, not a quotation, price benchmark or achieved DPS result.

Calculated from these assumptions: steady annual net benefit $193,700; year-one net cash $93,935; cash payback Beyond 5 years; five-year NPV at 10% is −$323,920. Change the assumptions below to test a different case.

Calculation Basis

  • Five-year, pre-tax cash flow. Financing, depreciation and asset resale are excluded.
  • Initial cash includes contingency, startup costs and working capital; year one reflects ramp-up.
  • Output is capped by demand. Count each production gain or verified cash saving once.

Plant-Based Beverage Baseline Ingredient Worksheet

At unchanged accepted baseline output, defaults reduce actual purchases by 5,000 kg and value them at $1.80/kg, reproducing the main $9,000 gross material input. The extra-volume ingredient cost already belongs in variable cost. Any additional annual trials / service belongs in added fixed cost once.

Plant-Based Beverage Equipment and Plant Upgrade FAQ.

Can a dairy line be converted to plant-based beverages?
Possibly for a defined qualified envelope. Assess ingredient handling, hydration, heat stability, separation / homogenization, package, allergen transitions and sanitation with the responsible specialists.
Is the whole-ingredient route always cheaper than bought base?
Compare full installed equipment, yield / accepted product, raw handling, waste, operating costs, supply risk and utilization. Ingredient purchase price alone is not the total-cost comparison.
Does a successful mix trial prove shelf life?
No. The actual qualified preservation, package and storage evaluation remain essential. A blend-room observation is only one part of product acceptance.
Are these prices or returns a DPS commitment?
No. The example inputs exist to make the business-case calculation reviewable. Actual scope, prices, schedule, savings and performance need project-specific assessment and agreement.
What should the first DPS conversation include?
Bring the product and package mix, operating baseline, commercial target, retained assets, site constraints, available outage window and the capital options you are considering. Mark unknowns for measurement or supplier trials.
